Well, a large contributing factor is that not a lot of people are actually cosplaying the canon design. I for one based my prospit Jake English strongly off of Rumminov’s Fancy Dreamer costume, which was definitely not sleepwear, but I was following the design simply because it looked cool!
Also, let’s not forget that, although they do strongly resemble pajamas, pajamas don’t have pauldrons on them.
Generally speaking, I believe the premise is that they’re supposed to be fancy. The dreamers seem to be revered on whichever kingdom they are assigned to, so it would make sense for their outfits to be somewhat “fancy”, as a symbol of their status.
Just my two cents, I see where you’re coming from, but still.
